How to start clicker training your dog

A clicker is a marker: it tells your dog which moment earned a reward. The sound becomes useful after it has been paired with something your dog likes. It is not a command and does not replace the reward.

  1. Introduce the sound. In a quiet place, click once and give a small treat. Repeat with pauses so the click predicts a reward.
  2. Choose an easy behavior. Practise something simple, such as a sit, rather than asking for several new skills at once.
  3. Click at the right moment. For a sit, click when your dog’s bottom reaches the floor. Then deliver the reward.
  4. Keep the pattern clear. Use one click for the action and follow it with a reward. Finish the short session with an easy success.

Read the American Kennel Club’s introduction to clicker training for more about marking and rewarding behavior.

Can a phone replace a physical dog clicker?

A phone can play a consistent marker sound. For a brief session at home, this online clicker lets you try the idea without buying separate equipment. Keep the device ready before the exercise so you can tap at the right moment.

Phone audio can be delayed, particularly with Bluetooth speakers or headphones. Use the device speaker when timing matters. A physical clicker may be easier to hold while handling a leash or rewards. Pick the option you can use consistently.

Take the next step in DogApp

The iOS app combines a clicker with guided training lessons, so you can follow an exercise and mark successful repetitions. If you want a signal to call your dog before an action, read about teaching a whistle recall cue.

Good questions

Frequently asked questions

Does the online clicker need an account?

No. This browser clicker is free, requires no account and only plays a sound after you tap the button. The full iOS app has separate in-app purchases and subscriptions.

Should I click more than once for a good response?

Use one clear click to mark the moment and follow it with a reward. Rapid repeated clicks can make it less clear which action you meant to mark.

What if my dog is startled by the click?

Stop and lower the volume before another attempt. A quiet, consistent marker word can be an alternative. You do not need to use a sound your dog finds uncomfortable.
